Questions
How do I install it?
From Google Play: Get it on Google Play (Billasaari: Bitcoin Places). The app runs on Android 7.0 (API 24) and newer. It is not on the App Store yet.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The whole atlas is bundled with the app. When you are online it refreshes from billasaari.com and keeps the last copy; the Places tab shows which copy you are looking at, its version and the dates the sources were checked. A refresh never replaces a newer copy with an older one.
What do Active, Quiet, Ceased and Unverified mean?
Active: Dated activity within 12 months of our last check. Quiet: The operator’s site is up, but we found no dated activity in the last 12 months. Quiet is not closed. Ceased: The operator or its federation says it has ended. Unverified: We could not open the operator’s own site at the last check, or only a directory lists it. Not a closure. The full method is at how the atlas works.
What does “changed” mean on a place I follow?
When you follow a place, the app remembers the status you saw. If a later copy of the atlas gives that place a different status, the place is marked changed in your list and counted on the Following filter. Open it to see what it was and what it is now; that clears the mark. It all happens on your phone — there are no notifications.
Why does Nearby ask for my location, and what happens to it?
Only to sort the list by distance, and only when you tap Use my location. The position stays on your phone: it is read once, used to sort, never stored and never sent. Declining keeps everything else working; pick a region instead. Details: privacy.
Why can’t I open some places in Maps?
Open in Maps appears for places drawn at their own town, district or island. National programmes are drawn at their country’s centre and programmes that run across several countries have no single locality, so the app does not pretend to pin them.
A place is missing or wrong. How do I tell you?
Suggest a missing place at billasaari.com with a link to its own page, or email hello@jukkablomberg.com with the place’s name and a link to the operator’s page that shows the fact. Every suggestion is checked against that source before it enters the atlas; the app picks up changes on its next refresh.
Is this financial or travel advice?
No. Information, not advice — not a travel, safety or investment guide. A status says what a place publishes, on the dates shown, not whether it is good, safe or worth a visit; adoption figures are the operators’ own and unaudited. The app has no financial features.
Where do the places I follow go if I change phones?
Nowhere — they live only in the app’s storage on the phone you followed them on. There is no account and no sync.
Can I reuse the data?
Yes, under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International with the attribution “Billasaari Bitcoin Places Register (billasaari.com/atlas), CC BY 4.0”. Downloads: places.csv · places.json.
